The Architecture of Light
How architects think about daylight, and how to borrow their approach when lighting your own home.
By The Precious House Studio · 2 July 2026
Architects treat light as a material, as tangible as stone or timber. Understanding how it moves through a room is the first step to lighting it well.
Follow the sun
North-facing rooms benefit from warm tones and layered lamps; south-facing rooms can take cooler palettes and need softer window treatments.
Think in three layers
Ambient light fills the room, task light helps you work and read, and accent light draws the eye to art and architecture. A beautiful room needs all three.
“Good lighting is invisible. You only notice how the room feels.”
