The Return of Travertine

Once the stone of Roman amphitheatres, travertine is having a quiet renaissance in contemporary interiors. Here is why we love it.

The Return of Travertine

Travertine is a form of limestone deposited by mineral springs. Its signature pitted surface and warm, honeyed tones have made it a favourite of architects for over two thousand years — the Colosseum is built from it.

Why now?

As interiors move away from cool greys towards warmer, earthier palettes, travertine offers exactly the right balance of softness and solidity. It brings the outdoors in, and it ages gracefully.

“Travertine carries time in its surface. Every pore is a record of water and stone.”

Honed or filled?

Honed, unfilled travertine has a natural, tactile surface full of character. Filled and polished travertine is smoother and easier to clean. Both are beautiful; it depends on how you live.

Caring for stone

Use coasters, blot spills promptly and reseal once a year with a pH-neutral sealant. Treated with a little care, a travertine table will outlast all of us.
